    Modified condition decision coverage is a structural testing technique used to verify complex logical conditions in software. It goes beyond simple statement or branch coverage by ensuring that each individual condition within a decision can independently affect the outcome of that decision. This makes it especially valuable in systems where correctness depends on precise logical behavior.

    In many applications, decisions are built from multiple conditions combined using logical operators such as AND and OR. Basic branch coverage may confirm that both true and false outcomes are executed, but it does not guarantee that every condition has been meaningfully tested. Modified condition decision coverage addresses this gap by requiring tests that show each condition can independently change the decision result.

    This level of coverage is particularly important in safety-critical and high-risk domains, such as aerospace, medical devices, and financial systems, where a small logical error can have serious consequences. By validating each condition’s influence, teams reduce the risk of hidden defects in complex decision logic.

    Applying modified condition decision coverage requires careful test design. Testers must create scenarios where only one condition changes at a time while others remain constant. Although this increases initial effort, it often results in a smaller, more effective test set compared to exhaustive testing of all possible condition combinations.

    When used appropriately, modified condition decision coverage strengthens confidence in decision-heavy code. It complements other coverage metrics by focusing on logical correctness rather than execution alone, helping teams ensure that critical decision logic behaves exactly as intended.
